The museum’s number of antiquities reflects Coptic history from its early beginnings in Egypt during its prosperity as a leading center of Christianity in the world. The origins of “Coptic” Christianity in Egypt return to Saint Mark’s trip to Alexandria in the initial century AD. The antiquities displayed in the museum reflect the blending of Coptic art with the prevailing cultures, including Pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, and its evolution to have its own personality and identity.
