The Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs are a complex of ancient burial sites in Alexandria, Egypt. This ancient site was first constructed as a family tomb and later expanded into a large burial complex. The catacombs are made up of three levels, the third of which is now completely underwater. The catacombs have a six-pillared central shaft and feature a triclinium, a burial banquet hall where funeral rites were conducted. Visitors are free to take pictures of the burials in the catacombs, and to explore them at their leisure.
The ancient Alexandria catacombs were a part of the Necropolis, a city of the dead. Although the Necropolis was largely destroyed by earthquakes, much of it was not. The Kom el Shoqafa catacombs are still in use today. This complex contains a banquet hall and three massive stone coffins.
