What happened to the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa? The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa were first discovered in 1900 by a group of workers who were digging a well. They came across a large room filled with statues and then further excavations led to the uncovering of more rooms and artifacts.
Visitors to the catacombs can view two of the tombs in the antechamber. The antechamber has a square opening and is the most important site in the catacombs. There are two other passages to the Hall of Caracalla, each with its own staircase. The Hall of Ramses II is the biggest of them.
