Abu Abbas El Mursi Mosque in Alexandria, Egypt

The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque in Alexandria is one of Egypt’s finest examples of Islamic architecture. It is also one of the most beautiful monuments in the city. The building’s construction started as a tomb. In 1307, a wealthy Alexandria trader visited the tomb and instructed a group of men to build a dome and mausoleum for the tomb. He also paid for the services of a mosque imam. The tomb of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi was re-enterable under the new dome.

The walls of the mosque are 23 meters high

and clad with artificial stone. The minaret is 73 meters high and is decorated with a beautiful Ayoubids design. The first section of the minaret is 15 meters high, while the second section is 4 meters high. The third level is 15 meters high and the uppermost level is 3.25 meters high. There are gold-plated designs on the minaret’s door, and it is crowned with an Islamic moon finale.

While in Alexandria, don’t miss a chance to visit the Souk district near the mosque. A bustling marketplace, Alexandria’s Souk District is a must-see. Shopkeepers here bring their goods from around the Mediterranean and the world. Be prepared to bargain – the Souk district is filled with bargains! You may just walk away with a great deal of treasure. It’s a great way to experience Alexandria’s culture.
