Citadel of Qaitbay History in Alexandria, Egypt

When planning your trip to Alexandria, Egypt, be sure to include a visit to the citadel of Qaitbay. This former naval base has been neglected for centuries, but it was recently restored by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities. Visiting this historic landmark is an excellent way to see the city’s rich history and culture. Read on to learn more about the history of Alexandria.

In the 14th century, Sultan Qaitbay of Alexandria began building a fortified citadel in the city. He did this after retaking the city from the Ottomans. Despite this, the fortress remains strategically important today. Its location on a narrow arm of land, a corniche, makes it an excellent defense for the city. However, during the British invasion of Alexandria in 1882, some of the fortresses were damaged. Later, they were rebuilt and reopened.

The original fort was built in the 1480s,

incorporating stones from the nearby Pharos Lighthouse. Today, the fort contains a small mosque and the Naval Museum. Inside, you can see relics from the era’s ships, including bottles of wine. You’ll also see astronomical instruments that were retrieved from the French. The fort is an important landmark for travelers in Alexandria.

The Qaitbay fortress overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.

The walls are incredibly thick and stand eight meters high. The eastern portion of the fortress is two meters thick, and has three colander-shaped towers. The northern part of the citadel overlooks the Eastern Harbor of Alexandria city. It is divided into two sections, with a roofed passageway and narrow windows. The Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th-century fort on the sting of the Mediterranean sea.
