Anfushi Tombs in Alexandria, The fifth tomb is the most important, richly embellished, and contains a stone sarcophagus, a staircase and an open courtyard. The ground flooring is occupied by retailers, and the oblong prayer corridor is on the primary ground. It covers an area of 350 square meters and has a richly embellished picket ceiling with vibrant reliefs. The ceiling is supported by four rows of arches that relaxation on eight columns. There is an internal terrace for women’s prayers which may be accessed immediately from the outside by way of a staircase. “For verily a lover is deaf to those that advise him”, so goes one of many early lines of Qasidat al-Burda written by the poet Imam Busiri, who died in 1296 AD
The Catacombs have been used as a burial ground from the 2nd to the 4th centuries A.D. The catacombs are a sworn statement to Alexandria’s fusion of Pharaonic-Greek-Roman types. The catacombs consist of three tiers of tombs and chambers reduce into bedrock to a depth of 35m.
There are 5 Greek stone tombs right here that date again to around 250 BC. Built of alabaster and marble, these sarcophagi have been discovered only in 1901 in several burial buildings. The catacombs of Kom al-Shoqafa date from the beginning of the second century AD. The tombs have been constructed for a rich household nonetheless training the old Egyptian faith. The combination of the traditional Egyptian motifs and the Greco-Roman artists expertise make of those tombs unique items. In these tombs the Egyptian old deities are rendered in Greco-Roman fashion.
